번개를 만든 남자

1899년 여름, 콜로라도 스프링스의 밤하늘은 언제나처럼 고요했다.
그러나 그날 밤, 하늘을 가르며 터진 섬광은 자연의 것이 아니었다.

실험소 안, 니콜라 테슬라는 거대한 코일 앞에 서 있었다. 

직경 15미터에 달하는 장치는 미친 듯이 윙윙거렸고, 공기는 금속 냄새로 가득 찼다. 

순간, 귀를 찢는 폭음과 함께 눈부신 전기 아크가 튀어 올랐다. 길이 40미터, 마치 신이 던진 번개 같았다.

그는 속으로 중얼거렸다.

“지구 어디든 전기를 보낼 수 있다.”

그러나 실험이 계속되자 문제가 터졌다. 

멀리 떨어진 엘파소 발전소의 기계가 비명을 지르듯 불꽃을 튀기며 멈춰 섰고, 도시 전체가 암흑 속에 잠겼다. 

주민들은 놀라 창밖을 내다봤고, 누군가는 하늘 위에서 춤추는 인공 번개를 목격했다.

다음 날, 지역 신문 1면은 이렇게 장식됐다.

“전기 쇼, 도시 불빛을 삼키다!”
콜로라도 스프링스의 새로운 이방인, 니콜라 테슬라. 그의 실험은 전례 없는 규모의 정전을 불러왔다. 

하지만 그는 태연히 말했다. “나는 지구와 대화하고 있었을 뿐입니다.”

언론은 그를 ‘미치광이 과학자’라 부르면서도, 그 번개 속에 숨겨진 가능성을 무시할 수 없었다.

1900년, 《Century Magazine》은 그의 실험을 사진과 함께 실었고, 

사람들은 전기를 ‘공짜로’ 나눠주겠다는 남자의 이야기에 매혹됐다.

하지만 테슬라는 그 어떤 자본가의 후원도 받지 못한 채, 다시 실험실 문을 닫아야 했다.
그날 밤 하늘을 찢었던 인공 번개만이, 그가 세상에 남긴 약속처럼 오래도록 기억될 뿐이었다.

The Man Who Made Lightning
In the summer of 1899, the night sky over Colorado Springs was as quiet as ever.
But that night, the flash that tore through the heavens was not born of nature.

Inside his laboratory, Nikola Tesla stood before a colossal coil. The device, fifteen meters in diameter, whirred with a manic intensity, and the air was thick with the sharp scent of metal.
Then, with an ear-splitting crack, a blinding electric arc leapt upward—forty meters long, like lightning hurled by a god.

He whispered to himself,
“I can send electricity anywhere on Earth.”

But as the experiment went on, trouble struck.
Far away, the machinery at the El Paso power plant shrieked and sparked before grinding to a halt. The entire city was plunged into darkness.
Residents peered nervously from their windows, and some swore they saw man-made lightning dancing in the sky.

The next morning, the front page of the local newspaper read:

“Electric Show Swallows City Lights!”
Colorado Springs’ new stranger, Nikola Tesla his experiment had caused an unprecedented blackout. Yet Tesla remained calm.
“I was merely talking to the Earth,” he said.

The press called him a mad scientist, but they could not ignore the possibilities hidden in those bolts of lightning. In 1900, Century Magazine published photographs of his experiment, and people were captivated by the story of the man who promised to give electricity away for free.

But Tesla would never secure the backing of any capitalist. Soon, the doors of his lab were shut once more.
Only the man-made lightning that had torn through the night sky remained like a promise he had left to the world, still remembered long after.
